How to Train Your Dog to Come When Called

Training your dog to come when called may be a lesson you may not want to bother yourself with since most times, your dog always comes when called. So to you, training him in this way may be a waste of time. The dog comes when called because he wants to. But if you do not train him, sooner or later he will refuse. You will call him one day but he will keep on going and risks his life in a fight or under a lorry. So let’s teach him to come whether he wants to or not.

You can start by attaching the long cheek cord to the neck of the collar, order “Sit-Stay!” then walk away from the dog the length of the cord. You then face the pupil and command “Come!” If he does not start toward you, stoop down and slap your knee with your hand as an added invitation. If he still refuses, give a light tug on the cord to get him going. Practice day after day until the dog returns promptly no matter how far you let him out on the cord.

Later, try to train him without a leash on and in a fenced yard or in some place where he can’t run out into traffic. If he keeps on going instead of obeying your call, turn around and walk away from him. Perhaps he wants to romp; perhaps he is teasing you, and will be so disappointed when you do not chase him, that he will change his mind and come back. When he comes, do not forget to praise him. And you must never call your dog to you for a scolding or discipline. Always go to him in such cases.
